Eddie Howe is urging Anthony Gordon to put pen to paper on a fresh contract offer from Newcastle United. Last summer proved challenging, with Liverpool lodging a bid for the former Everton player which didn't go through during a particularly tense June, influenced heavily by the PSR health check deadline.
Nevertheless, despite Gordon staying put, Newcastle hasn't yet succeeded in securing him on a renewed and improved contract.
Commenting on the situation, Howe said: "I always find those questions quite difficult because you are asking me to talk about something that hasn't happened with the potential of looking silly if it doesn't. We love Anthony and we'd love him to commit his future here. We'd love him to stay long-term at Newcastle and continue the excellent start to his career.
"When you look at the broader piece of what he has done he has been magnificent for us. We need to try to help him get back to his very best levels. And if that means him signing a new contract to help him resettle and concentrate on his football than be it.", reports Chronicle Live.
Gordon's existing deal expires in 2026 following his transfer from Everton. Despite this, there is ongoing interest from Liverpool and other top clubs like Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Howe has emphasized the importance of contractual stability for players to perform well, earlier stating: "I think having your players secure in their futures is key to their performances."
"You don't want the transfer speculation or the contracts potentially running into shorter terms because I think that it distracts and rarely benefits the player or the club.
"So, my wish is that players are always focused on their performances and that the outside distraction is minimal."
