Flood warnings issued across the UK as locals urged to 'act now' - full list of 34 areas

Communities across the UK have been warned to "act now" and prepare for flooding which is likely over another miserable weekend.

Some 34 flood warnings and 90 less severe flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency today, as further downpours are anticipated across the country. Southwest England and Northwest England are expected to bear the brunt of the latest deluge, which comes following the torrent of 60mm of rain falling at the start of the week.

But the majority of the flood warnings concern waterways across East of England and the Midlands, both of which suffered significant flooding last month. The heaviest of Wednesday's rain came across Norfolk, the Met Office said.

River Great Ouse, the fifth longest in the UK, is likely to burst its banks in multiple points between Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The Environment Agency says: "River levels remain high after recent rainfall. Flooding is still possible for the next few days while the rivers drain away from high peak levels."

There's concern too for River Ray across Oxfordshire, River Leam in Warwickshire and the River Soar at caravan parks in Leicestershire, among other rivers across the Midlands. Environment Agency also states the Lower Stour from Sturminster Marshall to Christchurch, Dorset, may burst its banks.

Flood warnings are issued when flooding is expected, in the opinion of the Environment Agency. When a warning is issued, those living in the area, it says, should "act now". It warns to;

  • protect yourself and your loved ones
  • move your loved ones, pets and valuables to a safe place
  • move to higher ground or the upper floor of a building
  • turn off the gas, electricity and water in your home if it’s safe
  • put flood protection equipment in place
  • do as the emergency services tell you
  • help others if it’s safe to do so

The Mirror told how Brits should urgently stockpile six items - including batteries and bottled water - if their area is made subject to warnings. People should "think about putting together an emergency flood kit" including the six key items. This may be wise if you live near the following points;
