Grand National punter lands £61,000 with Willie Mullins bet that 'tops the lot'

A punter was celebrating a £61,000 windfall after correctly picking the finishing order to the Grand National on Saturday. There have been a number of big wins reported following the outcome of the famous race at Aintree but this one ‘tops the lot’.

The bet was placed by a Ladbrokes betting shop customer trying to predict a 1-2-3 that even trainer did not think possible. They put three horses from the stable of the record-breaking trainer into a combination tricast, a bet in which you attempt to select the first three finishers of a race in the correct order.

The customer picked out Nick Rockett, I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West to finish in that order, which meant each of the trio’s six possible first-second-third finishing combinations were covered by individual betting lines. The £8 combination tricast cost a total of £48.

By correctly calling that the two 33-1 outsiders would finish first and third and that 7-1 second favourite I Am Maximus would come home in second, the punter took home an incredible £61,320.32.

Cal Gildart of Ladbrokes said: “And you thought Willie Mullins was the biggest winner at Aintree! It might have looked like a favourable renewal for the bookies, but this year’s Grand National has seen punters land some incredible wins, and this one tops the lot.

He added: “This customer obviously likes the reigning champion trainer, but we’d love to know what they saw in two of his less well-regarded chasers.”

Mullins, who won the race for a third time in his career, not only saddled the first three finishers, he also had five of the first seven from just six runners. The only challenger not to complete, Appreciate It, was brought down.
