A hidden gem of an action film that flew under the radar is now getting the recognition it deserves on , with fans dubbing it a female-led version of the John Wick franchise.

The adrenaline-fueled film, Kate, initially hit the streaming platform in 2021 but movie enthusiasts are just recently urging fellow viewers to give it a watch.

Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, known for her roles in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and the Disney+ series Ahsoka, the film follows Kate, a skilled assassin who takes out targets assigned by her mentor Varrick, played by Woody Harrelson, who raised her after she was orphaned.

As Kate embarks on her final mission, she fails to hit her mark and soon discovers she's been poisoned. With only 24 hours left to live, she sets out for revenge against those responsible for her impending demise.

Winstead's performance has earned her widespread acclaim from fans, who are drawing comparisons to Keanu Reeves' iconic John Wick character.

One fan raved online: "If John Wick was a woman, he'd be Kate minus the head shots. The movie is a string of fresh detailed action sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat through out the movie.", reports .

Another viewer concurred, highlighting the film's action sequences as a strong point. They expressed: "Kate is a pretty fair action thriller that is like a female version of John Wick. About a female assassin Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who gets poisoned and only has one day to live.

"So she decides to go after her target which may be behind the attack. Only to discover something more. I will say i was entertained throughout with its exciting action sequences."

The film garnered mixed reviews from critics upon its initial release, but they concede that drawing parallels with familiar action films isn't necessarily negative.

A critique in the Chicago Sun-Times read: "So, yes: Kate is John Wick meets Die Hard meets Collateral meets Kill Bill all the volumes and we've seen it all before and you're not going to get much in the way of original plot, but what you WILL get is a grindhouse of a good time with some bleak and wickedly sharp humour, screen-popping visuals and some pretty great fight choreography."

Kate is streaming now on Netflix.
