Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to offer Anthony Gordon a lucrative new contract that would make him the highest paid player at the club, amidst interest from their Premier League competitors.
The England winger was previously eyed by Liverpool during the summer transfer window after Newcastle approached them regarding a potential deal in an effort to adhere to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Despite the interest, Gordon stayed put at St. James' Park and has kicked off the new season impressively, prompting the Magpies to consider offering him a substantial new contract.
As initially reported by The Mail, Newcastle are prepared to propose a deal to Gordon worth just under $12million (£9million) annually, a salary that would surpass that of the club's current top earner, Bruno Guimaraes.
Preliminary discussions have already taken place with Gordon's representatives, despite ongoing links to Liverpool and newfound interest from Arsenal. It's suggested that Newcastle might contemplate selling Gordon, who was open to joining a Champions League club this summer, next year if he doesn't agree to a new contract.
While it's uncertain whether Liverpool would reignite their interest in Gordon following their recent acquisition of Federico Chiesa, the interest from Arsenal could potentially sway the winger in the upcoming months.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe kept tight-lipped about the buzz that Gordon could have been on his way to Anfield before last month's deadline, but he did mention the club's intent to retain him.
Back in August, Howe remarked about the ex-Everton player: "I've seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game."
"We put him in as he's a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best."
Addressing the rumours linking Gordon with Liverpool, Howe stated, "I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club's part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller."
