All kinds of posts are shared on social media every day. Most of these are false and baseless. Now, a new claim is going viral on social media in which it is being said that mobile radiation starts damaging brain cells in just 30 days. This claim is being made, quoting scientists. Let us understand how much truth there is in this claim.
What is the claim in the social media post?
"Scientists found that phone radiation damages brain cells in such a large amount in just 30 days that they become easily visible under a microscope." People are also sharing this post a lot, but the truth is something else.
What is the truth of this claim?
So far, scientific research has revealed mixed opinions about the effect of radiation emitted from mobile phones on health. Organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) have clearly stated that “radio waves emitted by mobile phones are non-ionising radiation, which does not cause direct DNA damage.”
Some limited research has shown effects on neural cells when exposed to high levels of radiation over a long period of time, but these effects have occurred in specific laboratory conditions, and there has been no direct evidence of this in humans.
Scientific View
Non-ionising radiation includes mobile radiation that does not penetrate the skin deeply. It can produce heat, but does not “directly destroy” brain cells. According to ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection), “there is no convincing evidence that mobile radiation has serious long-term effects on the brain.”
Viral image and the reality behind it
The viral image claims that “microscopically visible damage occurs within 30 days”. No scientific source or study link has been given for this. This is a type of fear-mongering content.
