If you use Google Maps a lot while traveling, there's good news for you. Yes, Google introduced 10 new, powerful features for Google Maps in India on Thursday, including new smart features powered by Gemini AI, safety alerts, and new travel modes. Most importantly, users will now enjoy a hands-free experience in Maps. You'll be able to ask questions, search for different places, and share ETAs without touching your phone. Let's explore these new features in detail...
10 New Features of Google Maps
Hands-Free Conversational Driving
With Gemini, you can now ask questions while driving in Google Maps, such as, "Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with good food on my route?" The AI will not only respond, but also find EV charging stations for you.
Proactive Local Tips
This new Maps feature will provide you with information related to your destination and route, such as nearby attractions, local shops, or food spots. It's reportedly an upgrade to the Inspirations feature launched last year.
Answers to Places
You no longer need to visit another app to learn about a place. Maps will automatically answer questions about the place, such as its rating, reviews, photos, or timings, eliminating the need to change apps.
Proactive Traffic Alerts
You'll now receive advance information about traffic jams, road closures, and delays, even if you're not using navigation. This feature will initially be rolled out to Android users in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Accident-Prone Area Alerts
Not only this, you'll now also receive information about accident-prone areas directly on Google Maps, so you can be more cautious while driving. This data will be added in collaboration with the government and will initially be available in Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh, and Faridabad.
Authoritative Speed Limits
In addition, Maps will now show users government-approved speed limits along the route. This feature is rolling out to nine cities: Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Jaipur, Faridabad, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
Real-Time Road Updates
Google will now collaborate with NHAI to provide live information about road closures or road repairs to help users select better routes.
Metro Ticket Booking from Maps
Users will now be able to book Metro tickets directly from Google Maps. This service is currently rolling out in Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Chennai, and will soon be available in Mumbai. Users will be able to save tickets directly to Google Wallet.
Voice Support for Flyover Navigation
Many people often get confused about whether to take a flyover. To address this issue, a new feature has been added to Maps that will tell you when to take a flyover and when not to. The special thing is that this will be done through voice, so you don't even need to look at the screen.
Custom Avatars
Google has introduced this feature specifically for Indian users, allowing you to customize your two-wheeler icon. You can select different bike styles and colors. This feature will soon be rolled out to Android users.
