Let us tell you that in May 2023, RBI started the process of removing 2000 rupee notes from circulation, which is now almost complete. By March 2025, 98.2% of the total ₹ 3.56 lakh crore notes have returned to the banking system. Now only a nominal 2000 note is left in the market. At the same time, for small transactions, now you will have to make do with ₹ 2 and ₹ 5 coins because now these will also not be printed. These notes are used the most

RBI has also stated in its annual report that at present the ₹ 500 note is being used the most. Its share in the total number of notes is 40.9%. If we talk about the total value, then their share is 86%. After this, the most used notes are 10 rupee notes, which had a share of 16.4%. The total share of small denomination notes like 10, 20 and 50 rupees was 31.7%.

Printing cost increased

RBI has stated in the report that the cost of printing notes has increased significantly in the financial year 2024-25. Last year this expenditure was Rs 5,101.4 crore, which has now increased to Rs 6,372.8 crore. The reason for this may be the increasing cost of paper, ink and security features. RBI said that there has been a decline in counterfeit notes of ₹ 10, ₹ 20, and ₹ 2000, but counterfeit notes of ₹ 200 and ₹ 500 are being caught more than before.

The project started with the name 'Sa-Mudra'

Now the system of counting, sorting and tracking of notes is being modernized. To make the management completely digital and automated, RBI has also started a new project named 'Sa-Mudra'. At the same time, 'MANI App' is being promoted for the visually impaired. This app helps them to identify notes. The full name of MANI app is "Mobile Aided Note Identifier".
