Many medical colleges in the country were charging an arbitrary amount of money from the students in the name of fees. At the same time, many medical colleges are giving very low stipends to students of the MBBS degree. Now, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a tough stand regarding this. NMC has ordered all the medical colleges of the country to compulsorily upload the course-wise fee structure and complete information about the stipend given to interns, junior residents, and senior residents on their websites. This big decision has come after two separate decisions of the Supreme Court, in which the courts had expressed concern over non-disclosure of fees and non-payment of stipend in medical institutions.

Why was this decision taken?

This decision has been taken to bring transparency and fairness to the medical education system. This new rule will help the students to know how much fee they have to pay for which course and how much stipend they will get during the internship.

Google form to submit data
The NMC has also informed that to bring uniformity in the process, it has created Google Forms for colleges to submit data on fees and stipends. The commission has asked all the colleges to submit the required details within 7 days of the publication of the notice.

Applicable to private and deemed universities as well
This order applies not only to government colleges but also to private and deemed universities. The NMC has warned that institutions that do not follow these instructions may face strict action. This may include issuing show cause notices, imposing financial penalties, banning admission of students, or even cancellation of course recognition.

What is NMC?
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the apex regulatory body for medical education and practice in India. It was established in 2020 and replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI). The main functions of the NMC are to set standards of medical education, monitor medical colleges and doctors, and advise on improvements in health care to meet national needs.
