School Education, NCERT Syllabus: Earlier this year, NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) decided to add chapters on the life and sacrifice of three great military heroes - Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma to its syllabus. It aims to awaken moral values like courage, duty, and sacrifice in the students. This will help students understand military history better.
Field Marshal Manekshaw will be taught in Class VIII (Urdu), Brigadier Usman in Class VII (Urdu), and Major Somnath Sharma in Class VIII (English). This step has been taken with the combined efforts of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education, and NCERT. The National War Memorial has also been made a part of the NCERT syllabus. This initiative will not only teach stories of military valor in schools, but will also promote patriotism, kindness, emotional intelligence, and a sense of contribution to nation-building in students.
History of military heroes in the NCERT syllabus
The Ministry of Defense has announced that chapters on 3 great Indian military personalities - Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma have been included in the NCERT syllabus this academic year. This initiative has been taken to develop qualities like courage, duty, and sacrifice in the students.
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was appointed the first Field Marshal of India. He was famous for his strategic acumen and leadership ability.
Brigadier Mohammad Usman was awarded the Mahavir Chakra. He made the supreme sacrifice while protecting the country.
Major Somnath Sharma was awarded the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously). He became an inspiring role model for Hindustan with his bravery.
What will be taught in which class?
The chapter on Field Marshal Manekshaw has been added in the Urdu medium of Class VIII. The story of Brigadier Usman has been included in Class VII (Urdu). The history of Major Somnath Sharma will be taught in Class VIII (English). The Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, and NCERT have jointly designed the new syllabus. The board has also included the National War Memorial in the syllabus. Through this initiative, students will be introduced to the military history of India.
