Mumbai is set to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the Maharashtra city, alongside Konkan and western regions, flagging possible disruption due to intense showers.
Mumbai, which has been experiencing intermittent rain since Wednesday morning, is under a yellow alert, while an orange alert was issued for nearby districts including Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
A red alert has also been issued for the ghat areas of Pune district, where the IMD has forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall” and “extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.”
According to the IMD's ‘District Forecast and Warning for next 5 Days’, similar orange alerts have been sounded for hilly areas in Nashik, Satara and Kolhapur, highlighting the risk of intense rainfall in the Western Ghats.
The IMD clarified that a red alert corresponds to rainfall above 204.5 mm in a 24-hour period, while an orange alert covers rainfall between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm.
“The alert is subject to change depending upon the weather conditions,” the IMD noted in its statement.
The Konkan region, which includes Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, is expected to continue receiving significant rainfall through Thursday.
Barring Mumbai and Palghar, all other districts in the coastal belt are under an orange alert.
