India on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the recent Israeli attacks in Doha, stressing the need for restraint and diplomacy to maintain regional peace and security.
Speaking at the United Nations in Geneva, India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Arindam Bagchi, said, “India is deeply concerned about the recent attacks in Doha, and their impact on the security situation in the region. We unequivocally condemn the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty. Such actions threaten peace, stability, and security, not only in the region but across the world.”
He said that differences must be resolved peacefully.
“India firmly believes that differences must be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy, in full conformity with the principles of the UN Charter and international law. Any escalation must be avoided, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states must be respected,” Bagchi said.
The ambassador also called for global cooperation in maintaining peace.
“We strongly urge restraint and a return to diplomacy to ensure that peace and security in the region are not compromised. India stands firmly in support of peace and stability in the region, and against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We call upon the international community to remain united in efforts to attain peace and uphold the rule of law. As a close partner, India reiterates its solidarity with Qatar and its people,” he added.
India maintains stance against terrorism
The statement follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s own condemnation of the strikes, delivered on Wednesday after his conversation with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.
Modi said, “India condemns the violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar. We support resolution of issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and avoiding escalation,” while emphasizing India’s continued support for peace, stability, and opposition to terrorism in all forms.
The air strikes targeted Hamas leaders in Doha and came amid Israel’s broader offensive across Syria, Iran, and Lebanon, which has sparked global concern over escalating tensions in the region. Hamas reported the deaths of five of its members in the strike but said attempts to assassinate its leadership had failed.
India’s response underscores its dual role in the region: maintaining strong economic and energy ties with Qatar—home to over 8,30,000 Indian nationals and India’s largest LNG supplier—while actively calling for restraint and de-escalation.
The stance aligns with India’s broader international position, including its statements at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit earlier this year, which condemned military strikes on Iran and civilian casualties in Gaza, and reiterated that a just settlement of the Palestinian question is essential for regional stability.
