Mumbai: In a significant policy move aimed at transforming Maharashtra into a global centre for quality education, the state government has approved the preparation of a strategic framework for establishing ‘Education Hubs’ across the state.

According to a government resolution (GR) released on Tuesday, the Department of Higher and Technical Education stated that the initiative aims to attract world-class international universities to the state, aligning with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the GR, “If global top-ranked universities begin operating in the state’s education system, students in Maharashtra will benefit from world-class teaching methodologies, paving the way for a brighter future.”

The state intends to capitalise on this opportunity by proactively preparing to host these international institutions and enhancing its education infrastructure to meet the demands of both skilled and unskilled labour markets.

The resolution noted that the state requires institutions capable of providing quality education, skill development, and research to support industrial needs and youth empowerment.

“These hubs will not only empower the youth of Maharashtra but also attract international students to the state,” it said, adding that the move would help generate employment and contribute meaningfully to both the state and national economies.

A senior official from the Higher and Technical Education Department said, “This move is part of a larger vision to internationalise higher education in Maharashtra. Our aim is to not only raise academic standards but also to become a regional education destination that meets global expectations in research, innovation, and employment.”

Earlier, a seven-member state-level committee was formed on March 25, 2023 under the chairmanship of the then Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) to provide recommendations on the matter. Acting on these recommendations, the government has now given the green light for the Department of Higher and Technical Education to formulate an independent policy and seek cabinet approval for the same.

The GR further states, “The Department of Higher and Technical Education has been authorised to prepare an independent policy and seek approval from the Cabinet.”

These education hubs are envisioned as not only academic institutions but also catalysts for economic development. The GR underscores that they will “help develop a skilled and educated workforce essential for the industry sector, thereby creating employment centres and contributing to local economic growth.”
