Mumbai: A 48-year-old woman was killed in an accident in Goregaon (East) on Thursday. The deceased and her daughters were travelling from Andheri to Goregaon when, at JVLR (Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road), a car coming from Borivali lost control, crossed the divider, entered the northbound lane, and collided with their rickshaw.
The car driver, a Central Industrial Security Force constable, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The police registered a case against him under Section 100 (culpable homicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested him. The Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Borivali, remanded him in police custody until April 5.
According to the police, the deceased, Hazra Sheikh, was a homemaker from Jogeshwari (West).
On April 3, at 12.35am, she and her two daughters Shahin, 20, and Sharin, 17, were travelling by auto-rickshaw from Andheri to Goregaon after attending a family function. When the rickshaw reached JVLR on the southbound lane, a car coming from Borivali crashed into them. The impact caused the rickshaw to overturn, throwing the passengers and the driver onto the road.
Hazra sustained severe head injuries. Bystanders informed the police, who arrived promptly at the scene and transported them to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari (East). Upon examination, doctors pronounced Hazra dead. Her daughters and the rickshaw driver sustained serious injuries but are in stable condition.
The car driver, identified as Dhondaram Yadav, 33, is a resident of Rajasthan and a CISF constable. A medical examination confirmed that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The police collected his blood sample for further testing and charged him with culpable homicide before taking him into custody.
