Pune: Kalyani Nagar Residents Protest Over Surge In Pubs & Bars, Seek Meeting With CM Devendra Fadnavis

Residents of Pune's Kalyani Nagar held a media interaction on Friday to highlight growing concerns over the increasing number of pubs, bars and restaurants in their neighbourhood.

The gathering took place outside Kumar Kruti Society and was attended by several residents who voiced their concerns over how their lives have been impacted due to the growing number of bars and pubs.

Yasmin Charania, a resident of Kalyani Nagar, said, "We residents would like to highlight the real issues being faced by us every day due to these pubs and restaurants. Focusing on traffic woes is an oversimplification of the real issues. Most of these pubs and bars are violating multiple laws like change of use violations, encroachment laws violations, rampant permit room law violations, encroaching on parking spaces shown on PMC plans and using them as bars, dining or kitchen areas, complete illegal pubs and bars with no licences to run a restaurant and yet excise has given them FL3 licences. All we want is that PMC, Excise and the Collector take action against all these violations that we have highlighted through MP Medha Kulkarni at various meetings and that their licenses be cancelled and our right to peaceful living be upheld."

Some residents also alleged that public drinking, noise and loud music, and suspected drug use have become more visible in the area. They claimed that the environment has become unsafe for senior citizens, children and women.

Another resident, Manjit Singh Dhupar, highlighted, "The bar and restaurant that is across our society has been a constant source of nuisance since it started. Hundreds of noise and nuisance complaints and a court case have made no difference, as they continue to blatantly violate all existing laws. This restaurant is being run in a bungalow that has a showroom license and doesn’t even have a license to operate a restaurant, doesn’t have a valid fire certificate at last check, and yet, excise gave it an FL3 license, and PMC refuses to take action against these blatant violations. We residents’ demands are very reasonable — that we do not want pubs and bars in our area as it affects our families, children and senior citizens. We request CM Devendra Fadnavis to take cognisance of our woes and demand he restore our rights as citizens to peaceful living."

Monica Sharma, a Kalyani Nagar resident, along with other residents, voiced their concerns and put forward the following demands:

- Cancel the licenses of repeat violators, especially those who have repeatedly flouted excise norms and misused PMC permissions.

- The Chief Minister had assured residents, during the Porsche accident controversy, that pubs, bars and restaurants would be shifted out of residential areas and moved to designated commercial zones — that promise needs to be fulfilled now.

- We are also demanding an immediate meeting with the CM, as we were not given a chance before the MP and MLA elections, and we don’t want to be sidelined again before the upcoming corporation elections.
