Pithoragarh
Pithoragarh is a major city in Uttarakhand state of India. The old name of Pithoragarh is Sorghati. The word Sor means - lake. It is believed that earlier there were seven lakes in this valley. Day by day the water of the lakes started drying up and plateau land was formed here. Due to being a plateau land, it was named Pithora Garh. However most people believe that this was the capital of Rai Pithora (Prithviraj Chauhan). This place was named Pithoragarh after him. Rai Pithora had fought with Nepal many times. He became famous as Raja Prithvi Shah.
