Boy, 13, who died after jumping in canal named as family deal with 'devastating loss'

A young boy who died after jumping into a canal in Exeter has been named as Delvin Musakwa.

The 13-year-old had been taken to a hospital in a serious condition after he was taken out from the water on Monday, May 5. Emergency services were alerted at about 4:35pm after it had been reported that Delvin failed to return to the surface after he jumped in. He was pulled from the water and treated at the scene of the incident before he was rushed to the hospital. Despite the efforts of emergency workers, Delvin was pronounced dead at the hospital. are not treating his death as suspicious.

The force added that a file would be prepared for the coroner. Acting superintendent Chris Conway said: "The family are being supported by specialist officers after this awful and tragic incident. They have asked that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with their devastating loss."

A previous statement from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "A 13-year-old boy has died after being pulled from the canal in Exeter. Emergency services were called at around 4.35pm on Monday 5 May, following a concern for welfare for a child in the canal at Clapperbrook Lane East.

"It was reported that a child had failed to surface after jumping into the canal. Police, fire, and ambulance services were in attendance. The boy was pulled from the water, before receiving first aid.

"He was taken to hospital in a serious condition, where he sadly died. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner."
