The Red Sea, famed for its winter sun hotspots like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada in Egypt, is a favourite among those seeking year-round perfect weather and mid-length flights. The added bonus of holiday packages makes it an easy choice for last-minute planners.
But for those after something a bit more unique, yet surprisingly accessible, there's a hidden gem known to Egyptians and kitesurfing fans but still relatively unknown to Brits - a little oasis of beauty and comfort called El Gouna. Just 30 minutes north of Hurghada, this plush resort town offers a plethora of activities and a selection of luxurious hotels catering to all sorts of holidays, from honeymoons to family trips and golfing getaways.
During my five-night holiday, I only managed to experience a handful of the many excursions and comforts this town has to offer, kicking off with an exhilarating desert quad bike safari to a Bedouin encampment at sunset.

My stay at the Steigenberger Golf Resort offered a glimpse into the more laid-back side of the resort, where guests range from families with young children to seniors enjoying a round on the hotel's own 18-hole championship golf course, situated across the lagoon.
For those seeking a more active holiday, the town offers plenty of options. The famous Mangroovy Beach is a hit with kitesurfers, while the chic Casa Cook Hotel sits next to a kite centre for those who fancy giving it a go, reports the Express.
El Gouna isn't just about golden sands; it's also home to stunning coral reefs and wrecks like the renowned Sha'ab El Erg and Careless Reef. These underwater wonders can be explored on snorkelling and diving tours.
Getting around the town is a breeze, with transfers taking no more than 20 minutes. This makes planning a day packed with activities not only possible but highly recommended.
For a truly local experience, hop on a tuk-tuk — they're a fun way to explore the town and make spontaneous stops a doddle.
When it comes to food and nightlife, Abu Tig Marina and the Downtown area are the places to be. With a variety of shops and restaurants, there's something to suit every taste.
As the sun rises, these areas become a hive of activity, attracting visitors keen to sample different cuisines. From the top-rated African restaurant Bongoyo to Camino, a vibrant Latin eatery, there's plenty to choose from.
If you're heading to El Gouna, I'd strongly recommend creating your own scent at Norshek, a charming shop selling hair and body products made with natural oils. Here, you can personalise your body butter, hand wash, perfume or hair conditioner.
Try oud and pomegranate for a sweet and indulgent, long-lasting mix.
For those who adore Indian cuisine, Tandoor is a must-visit, not just for its prime location overlooking the entire marina, but also for its exceptional menu, featuring all the classics as well as some unique fusion dishes.
Fanadir Marina offers a more upscale, tranquil atmosphere, allowing diners to savour uninterrupted views of the moored boats whilst enjoying a dimly lit dinner or shopping for clothes.
Among the dining options, Villa Caracas is the go-to spot for traditional Lebanese cuisine, while the neighbouring restaurant, Marzipan, serves authentic Egyptian fare in generous portions that are perfect for sharing.
Another highlight of El Gouna is its closeness to Luxor, a day trip that begins with an other-worldly drive through the desert, and showcases some of the country's most breathtaking landmarks, including the massive Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings, an ancient Royal burial site from Egypt's New Kingdom.
When staying overnight in Luxor, adventurers can take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise to spot many of the ancient landmarks, including the imposing mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, and the stark contrast between the lush, cultivated fields lining the Nile River and the surrounding desert and mountains.
