Kate Garraway halts Good Morning Britain for 'breaking news' announcement

Kate Garraway was forced to halt Good Morning Britain on Wednesday to make a "breaking news" announcement.

The host confirmed to viewers that 51 people had died in Valencia, Spain, as a result of the flash floods.

Huge rain storms caused mud-coloured waters which have swept through areas from Malaga down to Valencia on its east coast, causing at least 50 deaths, according to emergency teams in the region.

Terrifying images and videos shared from the areas affected have shown the several-foot-high rapid waters sweeping away cars.

More people are feared missing or dead in the affected areas of the country. Mayor of Utiel, Ricardo Gabaldon, told RTVE several people have been trapped in their homes.

Police and rescue services used helicopters to airlift people from homes and cars. An emergency rescue brigade of around 1,000 soldiers from Spain's army has been deployed to help with rescue efforts.

Another big news story that dominated today was surrounding the teenager accused of fatally stabbing three young girls in Southport.

Axel Rudakubana will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today, charged with two separate offences, one under the Terrorism Act.

Speaking from the court, Jonathan Swain shared an update: "Everybody is aware of the sensitivity surrounding all of this because what happened in Southport provoked and sparked riots around the country during the summer.

"Police insist that the stabbing of those three girls at the dance class was not a terror-related incident, but yet today, the 18-year-old, who is accused of those attacks appears here at this court on a separate charge."

Jonathan went on to explain police have confirmed this is a "terror-related charge".
