Tradesman dies in horror workplace accident while operating cherry picker near powerlines

A tradesman has tragically died in a freak workplace accident involving a cherry picker.

The tragic accident happend when 47-year-old Ausgrid distribution line worker Brett Hinton was operating a cherry picker after a storm on Thursday, May 22. Tragedy struck when he unexpectedly came into contact with live overhead powerlines, south-east of CBD.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports a 47-year-old had been seriously injured on Darley Road. It's understood Mr Hinton had a cardiac arrest after coming into contact with the live powerlines.

In a bid to save his life his co-workers sprung into action and managed to bring him down from the cherry picker and began CPR while awaiting the arrival of paramedics at the scene. Mr Hinton was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition, but despite the best efforts from medical staff he was unable to be saved.

A page has been set up at the request of Mr Hinton's colleagues to help his partner with any financial needs as she grieves and navigates 'this incredible difficult time'.

"The hearts of Brett Hinton’s family, friends, and colleagues were shattered by the tragic news of a serious incident that claimed Brett’s life. Brett was a dedicated and highly respected distribution lineworker at Ausgrid, where he served with skill and commitment for over 13 years.

"His professionalism, warmth, and unwavering work ethic left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support."

In a statement, Ausgrid said it was reviewing the circumstances of Mr Hinton's death and was working along with SafeWork NSW and police. Ausgrid said the company's number one priority was the safety and wellbeing of its employees and customers. It added assistance and support was being given to staff and Mr Hinton's family during this sad time, reports .

Outside of work Mr Hinton became an ambassador for endometriosis and has been championed for his work encouraging other men to learn about how it impacts women's lives. His death was a shock to the local community, with many sharing touching tributes on social media. One person wrote: "His bravery, empathy and willingness to speak up made him a brilliant and authentic ally for women everywhere living with this invisible illness."

While another wrote: "'Let’s honour Brett’s legacy by continuing the important work he so boldly championed."

The fundraising page has raised over $37,000 of the target amount of $40,000 as of Tuesday morning.
