Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has reclaimed global dominance by becoming the world’s No. 1 ODI batsman in the latest ICC rankings. After a stellar performance in the ODI series against Australia, Rohit surpassed teammate and former No. 1 Shubman Gill to claim the top spot. With 781 rating points, Rohit now sits above Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and Gill, who has slipped to third place.
What makes this achievement even more special is that Rohit Sharma, at 38 years and 182 days, has become the oldest player in history to reach No. 1 in the ICC ODI batting rankings.
How Rohit climbed to the top
Rohit’s rise was fueled by his consistent brilliance in the Australia series. Although he didn’t fire in the first ODI, he bounced back strongly — scoring a fluent fifty in the second match and a match-winning century in the final ODI. Across the three matches, Rohit piled up 202 runs at an average of 101, emerging as the series’ highest run-scorer. This commanding form helped him leapfrog Gill and Zadran to become the world’s best ODI batsman.
Rohit’s record-breaking milestone
With this feat, Rohit has etched his name in cricket history books as the oldest No. 1 ODI batsman ever. Despite making his international debut 18 years ago, it is the first time Rohit has reached the No. 1 ranking — a testament to his longevity, consistency, and adaptability in the 50-over format.
He also joins an elite list of Indian cricketers who have reached the top of the ICC ODI rankings: Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI career at a glance
Rohit has been one of India’s most prolific ODI batsmen, amassing 11,370 runs in 276 matches at an impressive average of 49.22, including 33 centuries and 59 half-centuries. Known for his effortless strokeplay and ability to score big, Rohit continues to prove that age is just a number when it comes to class and performance.
