Hamas's troubles are going to increase further. Hamas officials who have been living in Qatar for a long time may now have to leave Qatar. According to sources, America has warned Qatar to close Hamas' political office in Doha and expel Hamas leaders from the country.
Hamas has had a political office in Qatar since 2012. After repeatedly rejecting the hostage release deal and temporary ceasefire, the US is pressuring Qatar to close Hamas' Doha office as soon as possible. Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has said several times in the past year that Hamas is present in Doha to continue the talks and Qatar will keep it open as long as this channel continues to prove useful.
America's tough stanceA US official told news agency Reuters that the Biden administration has asked Qatar to expel Hamas from Doha. Qatar is a special ally of the US in the Middle East and has been involved in peace talks with Egypt in the Gaza war. The US has taken such a step when Hamas has rejected the latest proposal for hostage release. Hamas says that it will not accept any other proposal except a permanent ceasefire.
Qatar warns HamasReuters, citing US sources, reported that Qatar has instructed Hamas leaders to vacate the Doha office. However, no such move has been confirmed by Qatar and it is also not clear whether Qatar has given any deadline to Hamas leaders to leave the country.
Hamas presence in QatarQatar and Hamas have had very good relations. Qatar provides billions of dollars in aid to Gaza and Palestine every year. Along with being America's main non-NATO ally, Qatar gave Hamas a place in its capital in 2012. Since then, Hamas's top leaders have lived here and conduct political activities from here. However, now due to US pressure, it has become clear that Qatar may have to reduce its support to Hamas.
