Tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure where a tooth is removed along with its root. It may be required due to severe decay, infection, broken or weakened teeth, wisdom tooth complications, or orthodontic treatment needs.
There are two main types of extractions:
-
Simple Extraction – for visible teeth that can be removed easily.
-
Surgical Extraction – for impacted or embedded teeth, requiring minor surgery.
With modern techniques, the procedure is generally safe and has minimal risks, but proper aftercare is crucial for smooth recovery.
Benefits of Tooth Extraction-
Reduces oral infection and pain.
-
Prevents damage to nearby teeth.
-
Creates space for braces or surgery.
-
Improves overall oral health.
However, it may involve some risks like swelling, prolonged bleeding, infection, or in rare cases, nerve injury. That’s why following post-extraction care instructions is essential.

Diet Care
-
Eat soft, cool foods like curd, mashed potatoes, soups, and smoothies.
-
Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or sour foods for a few days.
-
Drink plenty of water, but skip using straws (they can dislodge the clot).
Oral Hygiene
-
Do not brush directly on the extraction site for the first day.
-
From the second day, gently brush around the area.
-
Use mild mouth rinses (saltwater gargle) after 24 hours to prevent infection.
Lifestyle Restrictions
-
Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 72 hours, as they delay healing.
-
Rest well and avoid heavy physical activity for a couple of days.
Pain and Swelling Management
-
Use prescribed painkillers and antibiotics as directed.
-
Apply an ice pack outside the cheek to reduce swelling.
