Centre Proposes the Use of AI and Innovative Technology to Check Traffic Violations

The Indian government is proposing the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative technologies to monitor traffic violations and ensure accurate penalties, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced. Speaking at the 12th edition of the Traffic InfraTech Expo, Gadkari highlighted plans to enhance toll collection systems, including the potential use of satellite technology to boost efficiency and transparency.

Gadkari stated that achieving road safety requires advanced engineering solutions, strict law enforcement, and the implementation of cutting-edge technologies like AI. He revealed that the government intends to engage private sector experts to aid in developing these technological advancements.

"A dedicated expert committee will evaluate proposals from startups and industry leaders, ensuring that the best ideas are implemented," Gadkari said. The committee has been instructed to complete its evaluations within three months, focusing on prompt improvements in the transportation sector.

Emphasizing quality, Gadkari assured that standards would remain high in the deployment of surveillance technologies, such as cameras, regardless of whether they are sourced from large or small firms. He urged small companies with innovative technologies to participate in government tenders, highlighting the need for cost-effectiveness while ensuring fair profit margins.

With effective technology, Gadkari believes India can achieve greater transparency, lower costs, and significantly improve road safety. He called on all stakeholders—government, private sector, and startups—to collaborate in addressing critical road safety challenges in the country.

Gadkari pointed out the serious statistics regarding road accidents in India, with around 500,000 incidents reported each year, leading to many fatalities. He noted that over half of these casualties involve individuals aged 18 to 36 years. The economic impact of road accidents is estimated to be around 3% of the nation's GDP. The minister reiterated that enhancing road safety is a priority for the government, with ongoing measures being taken to tackle this pressing issue.
