Israel's military announced on Tuesday that it targeted numerous Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon during overnight operations. This comes just a day after airstrikes resulted in significant casualties, marking one of Lebanon's deadliest days in decades.
Hezbollah reported that it struck several Israeli military positions early Tuesday, including an explosives factory located 60 kilometers (37 miles) inside Israel. The group claimed to have launched these attacks around 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) and targeted the Megiddo airfield three times overnight.
Following nearly a year of conflict with Hamas in Gaza, Israel is now focusing its efforts on the northern front, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel, supporting Hamas, which is also backed by Iran.
The Israeli military stated it successfully hit a Hezbollah militant cell, while its artillery targeted other Hezbollah positions in the south. Police in northern Israel discovered debris from interceptor missiles scattered across different locations.
According to Lebanese officials, Israeli airstrikes on Monday resulted in nearly 500 fatalities and forced tens of thousands to seek refuge. In light of escalating hostilities, Israel has urged residents in Lebanon to evacuate areas suspected of storing weapons used by Hezbollah.
In southern Lebanon, families hurriedly packed their vehicles, filling cars, vans, and trucks with essential belongings. Major highways leading north became heavily congested as people attempted to escape.
Nasser Yassin, the Lebanese minister coordinating the crisis response, revealed that 89 temporary shelters have been established in schools and other facilities, accommodating over 26,000 individuals fleeing what he termed "Israeli atrocities."
The Israeli military confirmed its operations against Hezbollah across southern, eastern, and northern Lebanon, targeting rocket launchers, command posts, and militant infrastructure. The Israeli Air Force claimed to have struck approximately 1,600 Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
Lebanon's health ministry reported at least 492 deaths, including 35 children, with 1,645 individuals injured. One official indicated that this represents the highest daily death toll from violence in Lebanon since the civil war that spanned from 1975 to 1990.
