New Chief Appointed for Pakistan's ISI: Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik

Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik has been named the new Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), as announced by state television on Monday, September 23. He is set to take over the role on September 30, succeeding Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since 2021.

Currently serving as an adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, Lt Gen Malik's appointment is traditionally made by the prime minister in consultation with the army chief. The role of ISI chief is one of the most significant in the Pakistan Army, which has had substantial influence over the country's security and foreign policy for much of its 77-year history.

Lt Gen Malik has a distinguished military background, having previously commanded the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. He is also a recipient of the Sword of Honour and has served as chief instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.

With his extensive experience and training, including education at Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies, Lt Gen Malik steps into this crucial position during a pivotal moment for Pakistan’s intelligence operations, which are vital for national and international security.

Gen Malik's Impressive Military Background Throughout his military career, Gen Muhammad Asim Malik has played key roles in the Balochistan infantry division and commanded an infantry brigade in Waziristan. He has received an honorary sword during his training, highlighting his exceptional performance.

In addition to his command roles, Gen Malik has served as the chief instructor at the National Defence University in Islamabad and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta. His educational background includes graduating from Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.

Gen Malik's appointment comes just over a month after the former DG ISI, Faiz Hameed, was placed in military custody by Pakistani authorities in early August, leading to the initiation of his court martial related to a housing scheme scandal.
