A new virus has been found in China, named Wetland Virus (WELV). This virus spreads due to tick bites and can cause neurological disorders. This virus was first found in China's Jinzhou city in June 2019. Recently a report about it has been published in 'The New England Journal of Medicine'.

Symptoms of this virus include fever, headache and vomiting. The first infected person was a 61-year-old Chinese citizen who was walking in a wetland park in the Inner Mongolia region of northern China. He got infected with this virus due to tick bites there. Tick bites are found in large numbers in that area. Wetland viruses are not cured by antibiotics. Blood tests of the infected person revealed that this is a new virus, which belongs to the Orthonairovirus family. This virus is also linked to another dangerous disease called Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, which spreads due to tick bites.

Scientists collected 14,600 ticks from that area and examined them. This showed that five species of ticks are capable of spreading this virus. Apart from this, this virus has also been found in some sheep, horses, pigs and a species of rats. A person infected with this virus shows symptoms like fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, back pain, restlessness and diarrhea. In some cases, tissue damage and blood clotting have also been seen. This virus is being monitored in China and scientists are working on its treatment.
