Mumbai: After retiring from cricket in November 2013 after a glorious 24-year record-setting journey, Sachin Tendulkar got involved with the Mumbai Indians team as an icon and mentor who guided young players and coaching staff. Never did he express interest in getting involved with cricket administration.
Recently, there were murmurs about the possibility of the Mumbai legend eyeing the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president.
With BCCI’s annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled on September 28, and election of president and IPL chairman top of the agenda, the rumours gained ground.
On Thursday, Tendulkar dismissed speculation linking him to the post of BCCI president, with his management company issuing a categorical denial.
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations,” the SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd said in a statement.
The BCCI president’s post has been lying vacant following the exit of former India allrounder Roger Binny, who stepped down earlier this month after turning 70.
Besides his involvement with the Mumbai-based IPL franchise, the 52-year-old Tendulkar was part of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee from 2015 to 2019.
Tendulkar, who owns most of the major batting records, amassed 15,921 runs in 200 Tests and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. He is the only cricketer to score 100 international centuries.
