All Creatures Great and Small returned to Channel 5, with Siegfried Farnon (portrayed by Samuel West) expressing delight as was presented with a unique opportunity. After successfully passing his exams, he was offered the chance to relocate to London to participate in a prestigious project.

Despite Siegfried's overflowing pride, Carmody expressed his desire to remain at Skeldale, believing he needed to contribute more during the war. However, the real reason behind Carmody's eagerness to stay in the Dales was later unveiled.

Carmody's childhood was marked by constant relocation, never allowing him to feel settled. It wasn't so much the job he would miss, but rather the people and the sense of belonging.

Siegfried assured him that he would always be welcome at Skeldale, even if he accepted the London job. With the knowledge of having a 'family' back at Skeldale, decided to take up the job offer.

Audiences might be curious if the character has permanently exited the series. Channel 5 clarified the situation following his emotional departure.

They stated: "Richard Carmody, wonderfully brought to life on screen by James Anthony-Rose, has become a much-loved and most excellent member of the Skeldale House gang who has kept Siegfried, Helen, Mrs Hall and the audience company whilst Tristan has been away serving in the RAVC and James in the RAF."

"We have all become very fond of him. So Carmody, a vet who never wanted to sign up to serve in the armed forces, has headed off, now fully qualified, to use his intellectual prowess and passion for research to aid the war effort at a special veterinary research placement in London, earned by gaining the highest grades in his final year at veterinary college."

"As Siegfried tells Carmody in episode five, he will always be welcome at Skeldale House, and that echoes the sentiment of the show."

"The door will always be open to Richard Carmody."

It seems likely that Carmody may make guest appearances in future episodes.

Although he may not have a regular role, he could potentially feature in the upcoming Christmas special or the sixth season.

Actor James expressed his joy at returning for the current series, having formed strong friendships with the cast.

He stated: "It was so nice to see everybody again, because not just the on-screen family, but the off-screen family as well on All Creatures, return pretty much every year.

"So, it's really nice to have all those familiar faces and to catch up with everyone. And because by this point, I've established relationships with everyone whereas last time, I was having to find my place in the group dynamic. I slipped back into Carmody very, very comfortably."
