Darwin Nunez's days at Liverpool 'could be numbered' despite scoring in RB Leipzig win

star has been told his Anfield days 'could be numbered' despite him scoring his second goal of the season against RB Leipzig. The forward was hugely influential in the 1-0 triumph in Germany but has fierce competition for his place.

Nunez scored the only goal in Leipzig, tapping home Mohamed Salah's header from a yard out. His contribution was markedly improved on his recent outings, constantly pressing defenders and creating a number of chances. The Uruguay international was unfortunate not to win a penalty when he appeared to be fouled by Willi Orban.

But things have not always gone entirely to plan since Nunez's initial £64million - which could rise to £80m - switch from Benfica in 2022. Only 11 of his 18 goals last season came across 36 Premier League appearances. He now seems to be behind Diogo Jota in the pecking order for the centre-forward position.

Former star Steve McManaman believes Nunez needs to score more goals, otherwise he could find himself ousted by Slot. "When you're an £80m signing for football club and you're a number nine, you need to score goals and that's what he is judged on," the ex-midfielder said on TNT Sports.

"And if he doesn't score goals, his time could be numbered.

"He really has to step up this year because he's two and a half years into a long contract but he really needs to start producing the numbers that a Liverpool number nine does. Salah stepped up, Jota to a certain extent has stepped up and Luis Diaz as well."

Slot was pleased with Nunez's performance, revealing that he asked for a goal from the Liverpool No. 9. However, the Dutchman also praised Gakpo and Salah for their parts in the Reds' only goal of the game.

"It's good and pleasing to see Darwin did a very good job today. I asked for a goal from him before the game and he gave us one," the Liverpool boss said.

"In the lead up to the goal Cody Gakpo was also important with Mo again with an assist. It's a team goal."

Liverpool and Aston Villa are the only teams to maintain a perfect record from three games in the Champions League this season. It has been a good start for the Premier League clubs in the elite European competition, with Manchester City and Arsenal also unbeaten.
