Easter egg with 31,000 calories goes on sale for £395

An handcrafted egg weighing more than 5kg and 55cm tall may be the UK's most expensive. Made to order by chocolatiers and cake decorators in Harrogate, the Bettys Grande contains a whopping 31,000 calories - 15 times the recommended daily limit for a woman.

The £395 egg is crafted from Grand Cru Swiss chocolate made from prized Venezuelan criollo cocoa beans. It is decorated with an array of spring blossoms and foliage including primroses, narcissi and pansies, with hand-piped stems. The egg weighs in at 5.4kg - more than the average domestic cat.

According to Betty's, the egg "continues a tradition stretching back more than a century, when our founder Frederick Belmont designed eggs which were ornately embellished with hand-piped icing designs".

The Easter treat's hefty price tag dwarfs that of other expensive eggs, including the .

The egg is made to order with a two-week lead time and must be collected from one of Bettys' Yorkshire shops. A smaller version is also available for £42.25.

The second most expensive chocolate egg in the UK is believed to be made by luxury chocolatiers Cocoba.

It costs £225 and weighs 4kg, and is also decorated by hand with piped layers or milk, dark and white chocolate drizzle.

The calorific eggs are unlikely to be consumed by a single person or in one sitting but could be a luxury treat.

An doctor faced a backlash last year for urging Brits to "resist the urge" to eat an entire Easter egg in one go.

Dr Andrew Kelso, a senior doctor in Suffolk and Essex, had said people should not "overdo it" when unwrapping their celebratory chocolate.
