Madrid Open star goes on bizarre sweary rant to umpire about standard of rival

Alexander Bublik started an unusual conversation in the middle of his round of 16 match at the Madrid Open. The Kazakh was facing Jakub Mensik, the world No. 23 and , when he sat at his bench and started chatting to the umpire.

Bublik was surprised by Mensik's level for someone ranked outside of the world's top 10 and went off on a tangent, swearing as he ranted about the good old days in tennis. He didn't win another game afterwards, and Mensik advanced 6-3 6-2.

The world No. 75 has been entertaining the crowd all week in Madrid. In round two, Bublik when he disagreed with a call.

But he regrouped to win the match and then , taking out defending champion before handing some gifts to fans in the crowd and .

And Bublik was up to his usual tricks again on Tuesday as he took on 22nd seed Mensik. The Kazakh dropped the opening set and found himself a break down in the second when he started reminiscing.

The 27-year-old grabbed his bottle and took a swig before turning to chair official Mohamed Lahyani, who was also having a drink.

"Mohamed, remember when tennis was easy, huh?" he smiled. "Like, five years ago, it was super easy to play tennis.

"[We had a] bunch of random people in the top 50 barely moving. Now this guy is not even top five, not even top 10. The f*** is that?"

The umpire didn't reply and Bublik got up at the end of the changeover, ready to face Mensik's wrath once again.

The world No. 75 was right to be impressed by the Czech teenager - after paying him a strange compliment, Bublik failed to win another game.

Even in defeat, Bublik was in good spirits. He embraced Mensik at the net and doubled down on his previous comments as he shook hands with the umpire, adding: "He's so good!"

Mensik is now through to the quarter-final of the Madrid Open for the first time in his career, needing only 56 minutes to dispatch Bublik.

The 19-year-old will now face either top seed Alexander Zverev or Argentine star Francisco Cerundolo as he bids to reach the last four.

Mensik is on a hot streak at Masters 1000 events, winning the most recent tournament in Miami. The world No. 23 stunned Novak Djokovic in the final to lift his first career title last month.
