From sleepy harbours to artist enclaves and Roman ruins, these French hidden gems promise a warmer climate, culture and an escape from the crowds. Joanne Lynn, travel expert at Riviera Travel, explains: "These hidden gems are packed with all the history and charm that the big-name cities have, but without the queues.

"If you want to experience authenticity and quieter places, these are ideal for a summer escape in that relaxes you. Each place offers something unique." Here are the top 10 destinations that the expert recommends.

First up is the postcard-perfect fishing town of Cassis, tucked between the Calanques cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea.

Often overshadowed by Marseille, this quaint port is a haven for travellers seeking great wine and sea views without the bustle.

The pastel-painted buildings and waterfront cafés invite slow lunches, and even slower days, preferably with a local rosé in hand.

It's also steeped in literary charm - travel expert Joanne said that F Scott Fitzgerald and Virginia Woolf both passed through Cassis for inspiration.

Further east lies Grasse, the world's undisputed perfume capital and a sensory treat nestled above the Côte d'Azur.

A short drive from Cannes, this town swaps beach crowds for boutique fragrance houses and pink umbrella-lined alleys.

Visitors can step inside the historic Fragonard factory to blend their own custom scent - a perfect gift to take home.

The cobbled Old Town is full of hidden cafés and lavender-scented air, and independent galleries celebrating centuries of craftsmanship.

Over in Normandy, Les Andelys offers a completely different kind of tranquillity - think medieval ruins, riverside picnics and panoramic views across the Seine Valley.

It's home to the imposing Château Gaillard, once Richard the Lionheart's stronghold, now a dramatic hilltop lookout.

The climb to the top is well worth the reward, says Joanne, adding that there's sweeping countryside views to enjoy.

Down in the town, you'll find family-run bistros dishing up local cuisine paired with sparkling local cider.
