Experts have revealed the most reliable electric car on the road, with Tesla nowhere near the top, according to new analysis. Research from experts at Warranty Solutions Group found the Nissan LEAF to be the most reliable EV on the road, with fewer claims than its rivals.
Warranty Solutions Group came to the conclusion after analysing 800 EV warranty claims across the country. After reviewing the data, it has become apparent that the Nissan LEAF has the lowest claim rate, at just 3.06%. The LEAF is one of the most popular electric cars in the UK, with over 71,000 electric models sold in the UK since its launch back in 2010.
Warranty Solutions Group said: "After analysing 800 EV warranty claims from across the UK, we've crowned the Nissan Leaf as the most reliable electric vehicle in the country. But the data also uncovers some surprising facts about which EVs go wrong the least, which are the most expensive to fix, and what that means for your wallet.
"The Leaf's low fault rate and proven durability make it a safe bet for electric driving. Its simple, well-tested design means fewer headaches and more miles between repairs."
According to Warranty Solutions Group, the MG ZS was next with a claim rate of just 4.76%, followed closely by the Audi E-Tron in third with a claim rate of just 5.56%.
It wasn't good news for Tesla, with the data suggesting that the American giant was one of the more at-risk models. The Tesla Model S held a claim rate of 50%, with the average repair cost standing at a hefty £703.50.
Warranty Solutions Group's operations director, Martin Binnee, explained: "While EVs and petrol/diesel cars break down at similar rates, EV repairs are more expensive. Buyers need to factor that into the total cost of ownership - not just fuel savings. Comprehensive, EV-specific warranty cover isn't optional anymore; it's essential."
WhatCar? has previously explained that the 2018-2024 LEAF model range was one of the more reusable models on the market.
However, drivers have reported some issues, including reports of some problems with the brakes, interior trim, and non-motor electrics. However, WhatCar? stresses that these faults didn't cause any breakdowns.
But, WhatCar? concluded: "Nissan Leaf is one of the more reliable electric cars. It finished in second place out of 18 cars in the electric car reliability category of our latest survey, with a score of 95.6%. That places it below the Mini Electric, but above nearly all of its rivals, including the Cupra Born, MG4 and Volkswagen ID 3."
