President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly planning to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, as cited by The New York Times on Monday. The Florida Republican is been considered alongside strong Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy. This decision follows Trump’s recent cabinet appointments, which have included roles such as “border czar,” White House Chief of Staff, National Security Advisor, and head of the Environmental Protection Agency. IIf confirmed, Rubio would become the first Latino to serve as Secretary of State when Trump takes office in January.
Who is Marco Rubio?A Miami native and son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. Prior to his Senate role, he served as a city commissioner in West Miami and as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2006 to 2008. He married his wife Jeanette in 1998, and they have four children: Amanda, Daniella, Anthony, and Dominick.Rubio has long supported a strong, assertive foreign policy toward countries like China, Iran, and Cuba. However, over the last few years, he has moderated some of his stances to be more in line with Trump’s views. If chosen, handling the Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda. In a recent interview, the 53-year-old suggested that Ukraine should focus on negotiating with Russia rather than aiming to reclaim all previously occupied territories. He was among the 15 Republican senators who voted against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine in April."I'm not on Russia's side — but unfortunately the reality of it is that the way the war in Ukraine is going to end is with a negotiated settlement," he told NBC in September. You may also like
