Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) in his second administration, President-elect Donald Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.
What is the Department of Government Efficiency? The Department of Government Efficiency, despite the name, is not a government agency. According to Trump, DOGE will work from outside the government to offer the White House "advice and guidance." It will also partner with the Office of Management and Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before." The acronym 'DOGE' is a nod to Elon Musk's favorite cryptocurrency, dogecoin. As of now it is unclear how DOGE will operate. It may fall under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which regulates how external groups advising the government should function and ensures public accountability. Typically, federal employees must disclose assets to avoid conflicts of interest and may need to divest certain holdings. Since both Musk and Ramaswamy would not be official federal employees, they may not be bound by these requirements.Trump said DOGE’s mission will conclude no later than July 4, 2026."Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies − Essential to the “Save America” movement," Trump said in a statement. He added that the new department could potentially become "the Manhattan Project of our time."In a statement, Musk said DOGE will "send shockwaves through the system and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!"
