KOCHI: Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko was arrested by Kerala Police on Saturday in connection with alleged drug use. According to officials, he has been booked under Sections 27 (consumption of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances) and 29 (abetment and criminal conspiracy) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
They added that a medical examination will be conducted soon, along with further legal proceedings.
Ernakulam North Police formally recorded the actor’s arrest under the NDPS Act, with sources confirming that bailable charges were invoked. Chacko appeared before the investigation team on Saturday morning after Kochi City Police issued a summons, directing him to report to the North police station. He reached the station at around 10 am with his lawyers.
The actor was questioned after allegedly fleeing from a hotel during a raid conducted by the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Task Force (Dansaf) earlier this week.
On Wednesday night, upon realising that the police had arrived, Chacko allegedly jumped from the third-floor window of his hotel room to a second-floor terrace. From there, he reportedly leapt into the swimming pool and fled via the staircase.
During questioning, Chacko is said to have claimed that he did not realise it was police officers at the door and thought they were miscreants attempting to assault him, prompting his escape.
As part of the investigation, police are said to have collected his call data records and texting history. He was interrogated by a team led by Ernakulam central assistant commissioner C Jayakumar and Narcotic Cell assistant commissioner K A Abdul Salam.
No narcotics were recovered from the hotel, and therefore no separate case was registered in connection with the incident at the property.
In a separate development, actress Vincy Aloshious had earlier lodged a complaint with the Film Chamber, accusing Chacko of “inappropriate behaviour” under the influence of drugs. She also reported the alleged misconduct to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), although she has not filed a police complaint. The incident reportedly took place on the sets of the yet-to-be-released film Soothravakyam.
