Gorakhpur: Tension prevailed in Jhangha area in Gorakhpur district on Tuesday morning after a group of youths attacked a transgender leaving him seriously injured. The victim, identified as Seema, was initially rushed to Brahmpur Primary Health Centre (PHC) and later referred to the district hospital due to critical injuries.

According to locals, a group of youths attacked Seema with sticks and rods around 8am near the residence of Vaishali, another transgender, at Dubauli Crossing. The attack is believed to be linked to a previous altercation that took place on Monday night during a tilak ceremony in the nearby, where some youths allegedly misbehaved with members of the transgender community. Although the situation was defused that night by local residents, tension resurfaced with a violent retaliation the next morning. Later, a large number of transgenders gathered at the hospital and later at the New Bazar police outpost, demanding swift action.

Taking note of the escalating situation, Jhangha police detained two suspects, Deepak Rajbhar and Akash Sahni, both residents of Jungle Rasoolpur No 2 village.

SP North Jitendra Kumar Srivastava confirmed that an investigation is underway and assured action based on the complaint filed by the transgender community.
