In an unusual incident, a Bengaluru couple was arrested after authorities discovered they were cultivating ganja in flower pots on their balcony. Their activities came to light after they posted photos of the plants on Facebook, as reported by The Indian Express. The couple, identified as K. Sagar Gurung, 37, and Urmila Kumari, 38, hail from Sikkim and operate a fast-food outlet in the MSR Nagar area.

The couple had reportedly placed ganja plants among their decorative foliage on their balcony, and Urmila posted images and videos of the plants on Facebook. One of her followers recognized the ganja and notified authorities, prompting the police to investigate further.

When Urmila was informed by a relative that the police were on their way to raid their homes, she quickly removed the plants in the dustbin. However, the police managed to extract some traces of the ganja leaves from the dustbin. Upon interrogation, the couple admitted to growing ganja. They had planned to sell the drug and earn profit. As per media reports, the police had recovered 54 grams and for further investigation confiscated their mobile phones.

The New Indian Express reported that an officer revealed the couple’s involvement in growing ganja plants is still under investigation to determine if they are active distributors. The officer shared that their mobile phones, now in police custody, will be examined for further details. During the police raid , the couple initially denied cultivating the ganja plants, but evidence suggested otherwise.

Following their arrest, the couple was granted release on station bail, and charges were filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In another recent operation at Bengaluru's Foreign Post Office, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) Narcotics Control Unit, working alongside Customs officials, intercepted a major drug consignment valued at ₹21.17 crore. The operation led to the seizure of 606 parcels containing various illegal substances, sourced from multiple countries including the US, UK, Belgium, Thailand, and the Netherlands.

The bust involved inspecting over 3,500 suspicious parcels with the assistance of a canine squad, revealing a range of drugs like hydro ganja, LSD, MDMA crystals, ecstasy tablets, heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, charas, and ganja oil.

The arrest of the Bengaluru couple for cultivating ganja at home, along with the major drug bust at the city’s Foreign Post Office, highlights growing vigilance against drug-related activities. These incidents underscore the authorities' commitment to curbing illegal drug distribution and ensuring community safety.
