Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is amazed at one of the latest achievements of YouTube . Replying to a post about the Google-owned video streaming platform’s recent ad success on the social media platform X (earlier Twitter), Musk said, “Wow.” The post noted: “Google-owned YouTube brought in $8.9 billion of revenue from just ads in the first 3 months of 2025.”

This comes after Google-parent Alphabet revealed YouTube’s ad sales totalled $8.9 billion, marking a 10.3% year-over-year increase during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings release. This performance narrowly missed analyst forecasts of $8.97 billion but still represented the platform’s eighth straight quarter of double-digit growth.

Alphabet as a whole reported $90.23 billion in revenue for the quarter, driven by strength in search advertising, cloud services and YouTube. The video streaming platform’s advertising engine now accounts for nearly 10% of Alphabet’s total revenue, highlighting its vital role in the company’s profitability.

YouTube, marking its 20th anniversary, remains the leading streaming service in US watch time and boasts over 1 billion monthly podcast listeners, Google and Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai , noted at the earnings call. Meanwhile, YouTube’s Music and Premium tiers exceed 125 million subscribers, he added.

What CEO Sundar Pichai said about Alphabet’s Q1 2025 earnings

At the earnings call, Pichai said that the company’s prospects are filled with optimism, highlighting how AI advancements and targeted investments are fueling growth.

Speaking at Alphabet’s first-quarter 2025 earnings call, he highlighted the “strong results” driven by standout performances in Search, Cloud and YouTube, and shared detailed metrics from the past quarter.

Pichai reported that Google’s AI-driven features and platforms have seen substantial uptake and growth across the board. Over 1.5 billion users now engage with AI Overviews each month, and more than 270 million paid subscriptions span YouTube and Google One.

He added that all 15 of Google’s products with at least 500 million users are powered by Gemini models, while Circle to Search—now on over 250 million devices—saw usage rise nearly 40% this quarter.

He also mentioned that Waymo’s autonomous vehicles are safely completing over 250,000 paid trips weekly, five times last year’s rate, while Google Lens added 5 billion visual searches monthly since October.
