Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and popular actor Vijay approached the Supreme Court, challenging the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Multiple petitions were submitted to the top court challenging the Act, arguing that it discriminated against the Muslim community and infringed upon their fundamental rights.
The amendment was passed by the Rajya Sabha on April 4, with 128 votes in favour and 95 against, while the Lok Sabha cleared it earlier with 288 members backing the legislation and 232 voting against. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on April 5, turning it into law.
Apart from Vijay, several political leaders and organisations have filed petitions, including AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MPs Mohammad Jawed and Imran Pratapgarhi, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, and Azad Samaj Party chief Chandra Shekhar Azad.
Other petitioners include Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, Maulana Arshad Madani of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, the Samastha Kerala Jamiatul Ulema, the Indian Union Muslim League, and civil rights group APCR. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has also strongly opposed the Act, calling the amendments “arbitrary, discriminatory and based on exclusion.”
From Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal MPs Manoj Jha and Faiyaz Ahmad, along with MLA Muhammad Izhar Asfi, have also moved the court. Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, DMK, joined the legal challenge, with MP A Raja, who was part of the joint parliamentary committee on the Bill, filing a petition.
Despite mounting opposition, supporters of the law have filed intervention applications in the Supreme Court, arguing that the changes align with the constitutional framework and do not infringe upon any rights of the Muslim community.
