NEW DELHI: Newly sworn-in Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Atishi on Monday staged a political gesture by placing an empty chair for former chief minister and party leader Arvind Kejriwal , symbolizing her hope for his return to the position.

Atishi said, "Today, I have taken the charge as Delhi CM. I am feeling the same as Lord Bharat took the reign after Lord Ram went on 'Vanvaas'. Arvind Kejriwal has set a new benchmark, he was kept in jail in false case. He said that he will not sit on the chair again until the people of Delhi deem him honest. The election is near. People will choose him. Until then, this chair would wait for him."

Atishi was sworn-in as chief minister on Saturday after Arvind Kejriwal's resignation, becoming the youngest leader to hold the position and the third woman CM in the capital’s history, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit .

Five cabinet ministers, including Saurabh Bhardwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat, also took the oath during the ceremony at Raj Niwas . This marks the fourth consecutive AAP government in Delhi.

Atishi's parents, Tripta Wahi and Vijay Singh, attended the event. At 42, she is the 17th female chief minister in India. However, her tenure will be short, with Delhi's assembly elections scheduled for February next year.
