A day after wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat secured a win in the Julana assembly seat in Haryana, former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar shared an old video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraging Phogat after her loss at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Chandrasekhar reffered to the video to highlight why PM Modi is respected by many.
Chandrasekhar, sharing the video, said that PM Modi gave him similar advice when he lost his own election.
"He motivated me to shrug it off and work harder. There has never been a leader like him, and I feel fortunate to work under his leadership."
In the video, PM Modi can be seen consoling Phogat after her quarter-final defeat, telling her not to let the loss affect her. "Vinesh, what happened? You got very angry. Why are you angry with yourself? You played very well, and your entire family has contributed so much. This disappointment is not justified," PM Modi said.
Phogat expressed her frustration, saying, "Sir, after so much hard work, if you don’t get a medal, it’s very upsetting." PM Modi responded, "In an athlete’s life, losing is not uncommon. They are not afraid of losing. My motto is: don’t let success go to your head, and don’t let defeat settle in your mind."
Congress leader Phogat defeated BJP candidate Yogesh Kumar by a margin of 5,761 votes. Phogat said that her win symbolises "the fight of every girl, every woman who chooses the path of struggle" and called it "a victory of truth and perseverance."
However, her party Congress failed to secure victory in Haryana after BJP won 48 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly , securing an absolute majority. Congress, despite early leads, finished with 37 seats. BJP is now set to form its third consecutive government in the state.
