SRINAGAR: J&K CM Omar Abdullah Friday said the assessment of damage caused by Pakistani shelling in border areas is nearly complete, and a relief package for affected families will be formulated after consultation with the Centre.
According to the govt, 23 civilians were killed in Pakistani shelling across J&K.
Talking to mediapersons here, Omar said damage assessment is nearly complete and only two districts are yet to submit their reports.
After India and Pakistan announced ceasefire on May 10, the CM, J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and opposition PDP president Mehbooba Mufti travelled extensively in the border areas of J&K as scale of damage is huge, particularly in Poonch district.
After visiting border areas, Omar called for peace and continuation of the ceasefire saying that war only looks good from afar. While Mehbooba Mufti went a step ahead and sought dialogue with Pakistan.
On Wednesday, Lt Governor Sinha visited Poonch and met the grieving family members of those killed in the shelling. He announced govt job to the closest kin of shelling victims.
Sinha also assured they are “significantly expanding efforts to construct individual and community bunkers across J&K, under security related expenditure.”
Meanwhile, the Congress Friday urged the J&K govt to reopen tourist destinations closed in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, saying the move is essential for reviving tourism in the Valley.
After meeting Omar and Lt Governor Sinha, Congress legislator and the party’s CWC member, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, told TOI that he “highlighted the hardships faced by people and asked for swift reopening of all tourist spots.”
Mir, who is also AICC general secretary, In-charge of West Bengal, said he informed both the CM and Lt Governor that reopening tourist sites would send a positive signal.
Mir said gradual reopening of tourist sites and allowing normal political activities like political rallies, would instil confidence among the public, send a positive message externally.
On Apr 29, J&K govt closed 48 tourist spots across Kashmir out of 87 destinations. The destinations included Yousmarg, Tousimaidan, Doodhpathri, Aharbal, Kousarnag, Bangus, Wular, Verinag and Naranag and other areas.
