Elon for felon; 'failing' NYT for Kamala success

WASHINGTON: If Donald Trump is not elected, this will be the last election in the United States, says Twitter owner Elon Musk . If Donald Trump is elected, he will do lasting damage to American democracy, says the New York Times . The two conflicting views by principals of social media and legacy media respectively underpin a volatile election campaign that polls show is currently a toss-up and pundits agree will determine the future of America, with profound fall-out on the rest of the world.

In a lengthy editorial endorsement of Kamala Harris for President that was as much a blistering smackdown of Trump, the NYT Editorial Board on Monday said Kamala Harris is "the only patriotic choice for President," characterizing Donald Trump as "unworthy" and "unfit" for office. Frequently dubbed by Trump as the "failing New York Times," the sentinel of the legacy media from his own hometown trashed the former President, who has been feuding with the paper for long, saying, he lacks the wisdom, honesty, empathy, courage, restraint, humility, and discipline and other qualities required for the White House.

The paper cited "his operational incompetence, his mercurial temperament and his outright recklessness" among reasons to reject him. The disqualifying characteristics, the NYT board said, "are compounded by... his many criminal charges, his advancing age, his fundamental lack of interest in policy and his increasingly bizarre cast of associates."

Among the cast of characters is Elon Musk, the world's richest man and frequent critic of the legacy media, who used his toxic bully pulpit X (formerly Twitter) to argue that Trump is "far from being a threat to democracy," and electing him "is the only way to save it" from Democrats he alleges are seeking to change the electoral demographics of the country by fast tracking illegal immigrants into citizenship that will allow them to vote.

"Let me explain: if even 1 in 20 illegals become citizens per year, something that the Democrats are expediting as fast as humanly possible, that would be about 2 million new legal voters in 4 years. The voting margin in the swing states is often less than 20 thousand votes. That means if the “Democratic” Party succeeds, there will be no more swing states!!" Musk claimed, alleging that the Biden/Harris administration has been flying “asylum seekers” directly into swing states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and Arizona and fast-tracking them to citizenship as "a surefire way to win every election."

"America then becomes a one-party state and Democracy is over. The only “elections” will be the Democratic Party primaries. This already happened in California many years ago, following the 1986 amnesty," Musk, who is himself an immigrant with a sketchy track to citizenship as disclosed by his brother, said.

Musk's argument was repudiated by many analysts who said he is getting sucked into an environment in which a prospective Trump administration would revoke the citizenship of anybody who wasn't born in the US. "You may be deported, Elon, if you cross this psychopath Trump. Vote Harris before Trump decides he's gotten all he's going to get from you," warned Keith Olberman, a liberal political commentator. Many Trump associates are in favor of birthright citizenship that will confer voting rights only on US-born citizens.

Musk has used his social media platform to canvas for Trump, including by relaying lies and misinformation, sometimes in the guise of humor, to counter the largely liberal-left orientation of the US mainstream media. Not that the msm endorsements mean much: in 2016, Hillary Clinton was endorsed by more than 100 newspapers, including NYT, compared to only about a half-dozen for Trump. He still won.
