Influential Democrat Ilhan Omar responded to Donald Trump publicly after the US President mocked her for quoting the US Constitution and speaking out on national politics. The clash erupted after Trump targeted the Minnesota leader during an interview on Fox News .
Trump used Omar as an example while slamming the Democratic Party, questioning her right to comment on governance because of her foreign background. “I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything, they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything,” Trump said on The Ingraham Angle.
“All they have is crime and she comes in and tells us how to run our country.” He continued by mimicking her references to the Constitution, saying, “‘The Constitution says this, the Constitution says…’ The whole thing is crazy.”
Omar did not let Trump's comment slide. Posting on X, she replied, “Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says,” attaching a clip of Trump’s comments.
Omar fled Somalia’s civil war as a child and became a US citizen at 17. She has long been one of the most important progressive voices in Congress .
The exchange follows a series of remarks by the MAGA chief suggesting Omar should “go back” to Somalia, according to The Hill.
In September, Trump told reporters he had joked about sending her back and claimed the Somali president had no interest in taking her. Omar has dismissed such threats, saying in a recent interview, “I have no worry. I don’t know how they’d take away my citizenship and, like, deport me.”
She added that she is no longer the frightened child who fled conflict. “I’m grown. My kids are grown. Like, I can go live wherever I want.”
The White House later responded to the viral clip of Trump’s comments by circulating an image of him waving from a McDonald’s drive thru window.
