Israel used 900kg American-made bomb to eliminate Hezbollah chief Nasrallah: Report

US senator Mark Kelly on Sunday claimed that Israel used an American-made guided weapon, specifically a 2,000-lb (900-kg) Mark 84 series bomb, to kill Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah .

Kelly, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, said, "We see more use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons," using an abbreviation for Joint Direct Attack Munitions.

"That 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that's a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out Nasrallah," news agency Reuters quoted Kelly as saying.

The United States has been Israel's largest arms supplier, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. However, the White House reported that Israel had not informed them of the airstrike that killed Nasrallah in Beirut, and US President Joe Biden only learned about it once Israeli planes were already in the air.

Israel has significantly escalated its actions against Hezbollah over the course of just over a week, resulting in the deaths of seven top commanders, including its leader, Hassan Nasrallah. This escalation occurred after Hezbollah joined forces with Hamas in Gaza, following the latter's surprise attack on southern Israel. The loss of these key members, many of whom have been with Hezbollah since its inception in the early 1980s, presents a significant challenge for the organization, which is considered Lebanon 's most influential military and political force. Among those killed was Nabil Kaouk, a veteran commander who joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and was seen as a potential successor to Nasrallah.
