Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his military to deliver a “strong response” after around ten rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip on Sunday, in the largest barrage since Israel resumed its offensive.
As Netanyahu headed to Washington to meet US President Donald Trump , his office issued a statement confirming the prime minister had spoken with defence minister Israel Katz mid-flight and had “approved the continuation of intensified IDF operations in Gaza against Hamas .”
Shortly after the statement, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of several neighbourhoods in Deir el-Balah , central Gaza, where it said the rockets had been launched from. “To all residents of the Gaza Strip located in the Deir el-Balah area... this is a final and urgent warning before the attack,” said Avichay Adraee, the army's Arabic-language spokesman, on X. “We will launch a severe strike on any area from which rockets are fired... For your safety, you must immediately move south to the known shelters in the Mawasi area.”
The Israeli military said about five projectiles were intercepted, while the others fell in nearby areas. Police reported one man was lightly injured when a rocket struck Ashkelon, while fragments landed in other locations. In response, the military struck a rocket launcher in Gaza.
Hamas claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.
Israel's offensive
The rocket fire from Hamas comes amid reports that at least 44 people, including over a dozen women and children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Sunday, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry
A series of overnight strikes targeted Khan Younis, where Nasser Hospital confirmed receiving the bodies of five men, five women, and five children.
In northern Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp, Israeli shelling killed at least four people. At Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, the bodies of seven more victims — including a child and three women — were received. Elsewhere in Gaza City, a strike outside a bakery claimed the lives of six people, including three children, according to the local civil defence.
Israel ended its ceasefire with Hamas last month and has since advanced deeper into the enclave in a bid to force the group into accepting a new truce and releasing remaining hostages. The military has also maintained a blockade on Gaza, cutting off the flow of food, fuel and aid supplies for over a month.
Hamas called the airstrike "a deliberate act of child killing" and a "confirmation of the sadistic and barbaric nature of the occupation and its fascist leaders".
The death toll since the war erupted on October 7, 2023 now stands at over 50,000, according to the Gaza health ministry .
