The South Western Railway’s decision to cancel daytime train services between Bengaluru–Karwar and Bengaluru–Mangaluru for five months citing railway electrification work has drawn sharp criticism from Rajya Sabha MP Kota Srinivas Poojary.
Expressing strong objection to the move, MP Poojary has urged railway authorities to immediately resolve the issue and withdraw the cancellation. He pointed out that the decision was taken without consulting the public or considering alternative arrangements, which would cause serious inconvenience to thousands of daily commuters.
“During monsoon, when road transport becomes difficult, people heavily rely on trains. Abruptly cancelling day trains will severely affect passengers, especially in the coastal region,” he stated.
The MP has already communicated the matter over a phone call to the Union Railway Minister, who has reportedly responded positively, according to a press release from his office.
Poojary has suggested that freight train schedules can be adjusted to accommodate passenger services. “If the cancellation of day trains is absolutely unavoidable, an alternative night train should be introduced between Karwar and Bengaluru via the Padil bypass route,” he urged in a written appeal to South Western Railway authorities.
His intervention has raised hopes among commuters that the railways might reconsider the decision in light of public interest.
